I love whodunits. I especially like them when they are done well and the motive is good. Usually, you get the “you picked on me in high school” or “you turned me down for a date one time” sort of motive, but in ISLAND OF BLOOD (AKA – “Whodunit”), we have a very good 80’s slasher/whodunit with great motive and a great atmosphere.
Written and Directed by William T. Naud, ISLAND OF BLOOD surrounds a production company making a murder mystery on a desolate island, but it doesn’t take long for life to resemble art. There is an unknown killer going around, murdering each of the people and in creative ways. One man is boiled, another nail-gunned to death, and another got a chainsaw to the crotch. The poor guy had a Member’s Only jacket, which is bad enough, but to get a chainsaw to the groin…that’s just unforgivable.
The killer leaves a tape recorder behind with everybody that plays this heavy metal tune with lyrics that describe the deaths. The whodunit is on and everyone is a suspect…with the exception of the guy with the chainsaw stuck to his nuts. I immediately ruled him out.
The atmosphere is very good and so is the pacing and I had no idea what was going on and who the killer was. I was eagerly awaiting the reveal and it did not disappoint and the motive at the end was very original. This is a very interesting and memorable whodunit.
ISLAND OF BLOOD fits right in with the great slashers of the 1980s. It is well written, interesting, and has a satisfying ending. I highly recommend it.
