The 2020 Oscars are going to be an interesting one that will offer the best of the best in a contest to decide just what was the best Hollywood offered. As in every film showdown, the results are subjective and can offer a few surprises that no film fan ever sees coming.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, the Manson film by Quentin Tarantino, seems to be the frontrunner for the Best Picture and Best Director nods, but early odds for the 2020 Oscars has been published and it breaks down the chances of the nominees. Other entries to look out for in the Best Picture category are THE TWO POPES and MARRIAGE STORY from Neflix, PARASITE by Neon and JOKER by Warner Bros. The award is going to go to a worthy film, but the competition is fierce.
The Best Director nod is a fierce competition with Tarantino (ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD), Todd Phillips (JOKER), Bong Joon Ho (PARASITE) and Fernando Meirelles (THE TWO POPES) will be going head to head for the distinction, but there could be some surprise with Olivia Wilde (BOOKSMART) and Lulu Wang (THE FAREWELL) in the running and ready to surprise.
The Best Actor category is as fiercely contested as any other with Adam Driver (MARRIAGE STORY) and Joaquin Phoenix (THE JOKER) in the running and for Best Actress, Renee Zellweger (JUDY) looks like a frontrunner as she returns to prominence in the film world, but Scarlett Johansson (MARRIAGE STORY) is in the running and has impressed everyone with her performance.
Best Supporting Actor seems meant for Tom Hanks (A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD) as his depiction of Fred Rogers is so endearing and sincere, but he will have his work cut out for him as he will be going up against Jamie Foxx (JUST MERCY), Brad Pitt (ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD) and Anthony Hopkins (THE TWO POPES) vie for the nod. I think many will be upset if Hanks doesn’t take it home. We all love Mr. Rogers and Hanks!
Jennifer Lopez (THE HUSTLERS) may grab the Best Actress award with her amazing performance, but it’s not going to be easy as she goes up against Margot Robbie (ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD), Annette Bening (THE REPORT) and many more qualified actresses that awed the audience with their work.
The 2020 Oscars will continue to display the best of the best that Hollywood can offer. This year, Tarantino seems hard to beat, but the contest is far from over. We will have to tune in to see what the stars can accomplish and what the judges decide. This should be fun.
